Keeping your dog within its enclosure or yard can be a challenge. They will jump fences or dig underneath them if their urge to roam is strong. Besides damage to your grounds and fences, you could be faced with the temporary or even permanent loss of your pet dog if they are allowed to escape. You can also be faced with Council fines even prosecution if your dog on the run harms someone while on the run. There are practical ways of keeping your pet dog amused during your absence such as toys and other distractions. The more lasting solution is to train your dog to keep away from fences and gates. Most dogs respond to repetitive voice commands such as ‘No’ and being rewarded when they respond to your commands. If you cannot train them or the training does not last, you may need to take another approach. The next step is to install a dog containment system which can be operated as an integral part of a training program when you are present, or as a control system when you are away. A dog containment system is essentially a low voltage electric dog fence. It comprises a length of wire which are either buried a short distance from the perimeter fence or other areas you wish to keep your dog from. The wire passes through a transformer which breaks down domestic electricity to a harmless DC current. A special collar fitted to your dog picks up a radio signal emitted by the perimeter wire and delivers a two stage response. The first level response is an audible warning. The warning sounds as it approaches the wire and is designed to alert and discourage them from continuing further. Should your dog move even closer to the location of the wire, the collar releases a small static shock to ward them off. You can set the distances at which each type of deterrent is activated and the static shock levels which step up if your dog fails to respond. Some dog containment models have remote warning alerts to advise you that the alarm has been triggered and an automatic cut-off in case your pet dog has become entangled somewhere - so the shocks do not continue. Dog containment systems can form part of a pro-active training session where the collar is only worn in your presence and you are providing verbal approval as reinforcement to the programmed responses from the dog collar.
